Should economic development be a higher priority for developing countries than environmental protection?
Economic development should not be a higher priority than environmental protection for three reasons: pollution, resources and for descendants.
First, economic development without environmental protection brings about pollution. Dumping industrial waste on the ground or at sea is economical, but hurts ecology. For example, Japan experienced high economic growth between 1950s and 1960s, however, suffered from pollution-related diseases such as Minamata disease, Itai-Itai disease and Yokkaichi asthma. The economy should be developed with due consideration for the atmosphere.
Second, the priority of economic development depletes resources. Oil and gas are limited and difficult to be made artificially. Meanwhile, trees retain rainwater and absorb carbon dioxide emissions. So, if extra trees are cut, it negatively affects nature. Furthermore, as trees are not growing so fast, recovery is time-consuming. Losing resources is easy, yet recuperation takes time.
Last but not least, the environment belongs not to current people, but to descendants. Prioritizing economic development means focusing on the present, implying that future generations will be sacrificed. Indeed, some species including moas and passenger pigeons were extinct due to excessive hunting and others are regarded as endangered, which is the result of selecting here and now. Protecting the environment is protecting the future. People should pass this planet to the unborn carefully.
The economy and life are built on earth. Hence, if you choose immediate profits over the environment, it is putting the cart before the horse.
