Agree or disagree: Governments should spend more money on genetic engineering technology.
Governments should spend more money on genetic engineering technology for three reasons: medicine, food and the environment.
First and foremost, genetic engineering promotes the development of medicine. For example, insulin, a hormone to heal diabetes, was extracted from pancreases of livestock such as pigs, fish or whales in the past, however, the amount was too small to satisfy demand. Now, genetic engineering technology succeeds in supplying massive human insulin. In addition, hepatitis B vaccines are also made with the technology.
Second, genetic engineering helps breed yeasts or koji molds or make sweeteners or food additives. For instance, chymosin, a gastric enzyme which is secreted in the abomasum of a calf, is indispensable in producing natural cheeses, nevertheless, cannot be extracted in large quantities. Yet, incorporating a gene into a microbe enables fermentation enormously. So, the technique contributes to the food industry.
Last but not least, genetic engineering encourages bioremediation. The biotechnology that remediates the environment by decomposing pollutants uses microorganisms, the reactivity of which can be strengthened by gene recombination. Furthermore, biodegradable plastics such as polylactic acids that can be decomposed by microbial activity are developed by applying the methodology.
Genetic engineering technology is useful for the above-mentioned reasons, therefore should be funded more by the authorities.
