Should students learn more languages?
Students should learn more languages from three perspectives: diversity of mindsets, information collection and human relationships.
First and foremost, more languages bring about more thoughts. For example, while the Japanese word “mugi” includes barley, wheat and rye, there is not a word equal to mugi in English. In addition, the third language promotes further relativization of thinking. The more you understand languages, the wider your view gets.
Second, more tongues lead to more information. For instance, Australian Aborigines have fire prevention measures and can prevent large fires by causing small fires intentionally. If you can speak the Aboriginal dialect, you can acquire such valuable wisdom. It may be possible to do it with conversations in English, however, by using the vernacular, you can communicate with them more directly, and therefore, obtain more accurate intelligence. A variety of languages contribute to a variety of knowledge.
Last but not least, languages help develop rapport with natives. Your speech in the local language will close the mental distance between you and the locals, who feel strong affinities with you. Furthermore, you will benefit from useful connections in terms of your career. The more friends you have, the larger your influence will be.
As students can gain rich profits through languages, they should learn more.
