執筆したのが2022年から2023年にかけてであるため、現状にそぐわない可能性があります。

文章の構成は、PREP、すなわち、Point（主張）、Reason（理由）、Example（具体例）、そして再びPointの順になっています。PREPについては、遠田和子 / 岩淵デボラ『英語「なるほど!」ライティング』（講談社インターナショナル、2007年）のCHAPTER 12「英文はとにかく『結論が先』－『起承転結』から抜け出そう」、CHAPTER 13「エッセイを書こう－PREP手法」（P190-215）をご参照ください。

ここでは主張を明確にするため、最初に”I think”や”I do not think”と書いていません。詳細は、遠田和子 / 岩淵デボラ『英語「なるほど!」ライティング』（講談社インターナショナル、2007年）のCHAPTER 9「自信を持って言い切ろう」、「2　「思います」とI thinkのニュアンスは別」（P146-147）をご参照ください。

Should nuclear weapons be justified?

Nuclear weapons should not be justified for three reasons: destructive power, radioactive contamination and economic loss.

First and foremost, nuclear weapons cause devastating damage. For example, atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945, leaving about 140,000 and 74,000 people dead between the dates of each detonation and December of the year and destroying 18,000 and 76,000 buildings, respectively. Now, around 12,700 nuclear arms are said to exist around the world as of early 2022 and their blasts are powerful enough to end humankind.

Second, nuclear weapons bring about radioactive contamination. For instance, contaminated areas cannot be lived in for quite some time. In addition, the survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings suffer aftereffects of irradiated radiation such as leukemia or cancer and their descendants experience genetic effects. The numbers of people on the List of the A-Bomb Dead in Hiroshima and Nagasaki are 333,907 and 192,310 as of 6 and 9 August 2022, respectively as the affected continue to die.

Last but not least, nuclear weapons lead to economic stagnation. Say, polluted lands or oceans make agriculture or fishery impossible. Furthermore, nuclear explosions yield “nuclear winter,” the phenomenon where massive soot cools the earth to the extent that crops cannot be grown. Nukes inflict long-term damage to economic activities.

So, nuclear weapons should not be justified for any reason whatsoever.
