Should teachers discipline students more flexibly?
Teachers should discipline students more flexibly for three reasons: diversity, communications and role-sharing.
First and foremost, students have diverse abilities, personalities, and degrees of growth, so teachers should deal with each child based on his or her character. For example, children with autism or Asperger syndrome tend to disobey, however, they may have special talents. Discipline should be implemented while respecting students’ unique characteristics.
Second, discipline is generally regarded as severity, which implies punishment, nevertheless, some students shrink away with punishment, and may not be able to go to school. Teachers should not administer corporal punishment to pupils to enforce discipline but communicate with them gently to gain their confidence. Punishment will often make students defiant and hate schools, which is unfavorable not only to students but also to teachers.
Last but not least, it is parents that should be mainly responsible for discipline. For instance, while it is difficult for teachers to focus on each student for a long time, parents can look at their children more carefully. Teachers do not need to bear the responsibility of discipline alone but share it with students’ families.
When it comes to discipline, teachers should not become rigid due to the above-mentioned reasons.
