Globalization is a positive force in today’s world.
Globalization is not a positive force in today’s world from three perspectives: pandemic, energy and supply chain.
First and foremost, globalization makes it easier to cause a pandemic. For example, COVID-19, a virus from Wuhan, China, spread throughout the world in no time as people frequently traveled to and fro. If citizens worked locally, the infection could have been limited to local areas. The global system is susceptible to infectious diseases.
Second, globalization jeopardizes the security of energy supply. For instance, European countries, especially Germany, depended on Russian oil and natural gas mainly via a pipeline. But now, because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, they applied sanctions against Russia and curbed the exports from it. The connection with an authoritarian state is risky.
Last but not least, globalization is vulnerable to supply chain disruptions. Say, rare elements, which are called the vitamins of industry and indispensable to electric vehicles and wind power generators, are almost supplied by China with low wages and lenient environmental regulations, however, the chasm between China and the U.S. threatens the stable supply. In addition, Western nations oppose the goods from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region since such products may be made by forced labor. International specialization is incompatible with economic security.
Therefore, I would like to say again that globalization is a negative force today. It will not only spur pandemics but will also imperil economic international interdependence.
