Has a university degree in the humanities lost its relevance in today’s world?
A university degree in the humanities has not lost its relevance in today’s world from three perspectives: broad viewpoint, practicality and expertise.
First, the humanities broaden people’s horizons. For example, the concepts of democracy and human rights are now regarded as usual, however, they are conceived by thinkers such as John Locke or Jean-Jacques Rousseau and realized by the Glorious Revolution, the American Revolution and the French Revolution in the 1600s or 1700s, leading to a paradigm shift from absolute monarchy. The present situation, including discrimination and inequality, is not natural, but created, so the questioning attitude to the current framework and standpoint to improve them should be developed based on the humanities.
Second, the humanities are helpful for life. For instance, Aristotle said that not kinesis but energeia is a human way of living, which means that you should focus on what you want to do at the moment without being concerned about the future, and you will finally succeed. The humanities can be a compass to guide humans.
Last, universities are necessary for the humanities. Say, paleography is indispensable to read historical documents such as Aristotle’s works, and educational facilities are essential to maintain some disciplines, including paleography, as they are unprofitable. In addition, such institutions are also vital to train students.
The humanities are a treasure trove of predecessors’ wisdom, promoting a better understanding, so they and the establishment to preserve them still remain relevant.
