Can renewable energy sources replace fossil fuels?

Renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar power, hydropower or geothermal power, can replace fossil fuels from three perspectives: economics, global warming and security of supply.

First and foremost, thanks to technical innovation, renewable energy’s cost-performance is getting higher. For example, the new IRENA report shows that almost two-thirds of renewable power added in 2021 had lower costs than the cheapest coal-fired options in G20 countries, which means that renewables are competitive in price with fossil fuels*. Indeed, renewables may be intermittent, however, the issue can be solved by blending in such energy with storage technology.

Second, renewable energy ought to be introduced to promote decarbonization as it is sustainable and does not emit carbon dioxide. Nuclear energy also helps, nevertheless, it is very perilous as it produces nuclear waste and may inflict devastating damage such as in Chornobyl and Fukushima. Hence, renewables are ideal in safety terms.

Last but not least, nations have the motivation to support renewables, for instance, by subsidizing them, to secure energy supply. Say, European nations underwent an energy crisis as they laid an oil embargo against Russia after the state invaded Ukraine. Non-producers of fossil fuels, including Japan, are forced to depend on producers, therefore they need to achieve energy independence and renewable energy is an effective tool.

Fossil fuels will be depleted finally, so we have to live without them. Renewables are the best option to do so for the above-mentioned reasons.
