Agree or disagree: History education can be free of bias.
History education cannot ever be free from bias for the following three aspects: who, what and how.
First and foremost, educational contents depend on who teaches them. For example, in the U.S., some scholars advocate critical race theory, arguing that the notion of race is not based on nature but artificially created for oppression and exploitation. While liberal teachers instruct the idea at school, conservative parents oppose it. All materials are not always accepted by all people.
Second, the transformation of authorities may change what should be taught. For instance, after World War II in Japan, the General Headquarters of the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers promoted the democratization of education, ordering inappropriate parts of textbooks to be deleted. If persons in power are altered, lessons may also be amended.
Last but not least, how to teach history is different in each country. Say, in Germany, the Nazis and their barbarities, including the Holocaust, are learnt as not only Adolf Hitler’s and his Schutzstaffel’s but also all Germans’ responsibilities. In addition, Germany and France have published a common history textbook, considering the brutalities as a European-wide issue. Meanwhile, such efforts are sluggish between China or Korea and Japan.
History has diverse interpretations and views, which cannot escape from bias. They should be respected, however, not forced.
