Agree or disagree: Infectious diseases will become a bigger problem in the coming decades.

Infectious diseases will become a bigger problem from three perspectives: population growth, global warming and exploitation.

First and foremost, the world’s residents continue to grow, being expected to be 9 billion by 2037 and 10.4 billion by 2080s. As the number of people increases, the susceptibility to infectious diseases also rises. In addition, urbanization increases population density and globalization promotes mobility, facilitating a pandemic. Furthermore, in developing countries, many poor families tend to have many children due to the need for the workforce and high infant mortality in the poor public health and medical system, who are susceptible to an infection.

Second, global warming facilitates the spread of infectious diseases. For example, mosquitoes, which carry some plagues such as malaria, dengue fever, West Nile fever or Japanese encephalitis, proliferate as temperatures go up. Besides, elevated water temperatures may aggravate water quality, boosting the epidemic of cholera.

Last but not least, development makes it easier to cause infectious diseases. For instance, the opening up of lands brings the disruption of the ecosystem, enhancing the chances of the contact between humans and wildlife with unknown pathogens. Additionally, research demonstrates that as biodiversity becomes richer, the risk of contagion from animals decreases.

Civilization will bring many benefits to the human race, although it will also foster the peril of infectious diseases.
