Do humans have negative impacts on biodiversity?
Humans have negative impacts on biodiversity from three perspectives: exploitation, introduction and global warming.
First and foremost, the human race has exploited the environment, depriving creatures of habitats. For example, forests and wetlands are indispensable for living beings, however, they have been developed by people, being reduced, deteriorated or even eliminated. In addition, overhunting and overfishing, such as poaching African elephants for ivory, heightened the risk of extinction.
Second, humankind has introduced a variety of objects detrimental to biodiversity. For instance, they have carried invasive species that threaten traditional ones. Furthermore, chemicals such as insecticides, pesticides or detergents kill an enormous number of plants and animals. Waste plastics turned into microplastics, which are easy to absorb toxic substances, are ingested by and accumulated in the many forms of life, adversely affecting the ecosystem as well.
Last but not least, global warming brings about the changes in natural conditions, including ocean acidification, sea level rise or unusual weather conditions. The conversions are so rapid that organisms cannot keep up with them. And the main cause of global warming is carbon dioxide emissions from human activities.
The deleterious effects of humans on biota are particularly significant, so we should make our best efforts to preserve it.
