Have humans done irreversible damage to the planet?
Humans have not done irreversible damage to the planet from three perspectives: environmental protection, wildlife conservation, and nuclear non-proliferation.
First and foremost, governments take actions against global warming. For example, the Paris Agreement was adopted at COP 21. The international treaty on climate change, whose goal is to limit global warming to well below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels, requires economic and social transformation, contributing to reducing fossil fuels and promoting renewables. That means, efforts to protect the environment are being made.
Second, measures to prevent plants and animals from becoming extinct are carried out. For instance, the Washington Convention controls the import and export of endangered species of wild fauna and flora as well as the products made from those species, such as ivories, stuffed animals or leather goods, saving living things in the wild.
Last but not least, discussions on reducing mass-destructive nuclear weapons are continuing. Say, as of 2022, 191 parties join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the world’s largest international nuclear disarmament framework, which allows only 5 superpowers to hold nuclear arms and requires non-nuclear nations to accept the International Atomic Energy Agency’s inspections. In addition, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons became effective in 2021, leading towards total elimination. These arrangements’ objectives are elusive, however, struggling to be reached.
Indeed, mankind may damage the earth, nevertheless, is committed to not making it final.
