Should democratic nations actively promote the spread of democracy to nondemocratic nations?
Democratic nations should actively promote the spread of democracy to nondemocratic for three reasons: politics, economy, and the right to speech.
First, nondemocratic countries often go in the wrong direction. While democratic countries can change their policies via elections, authoritarian countries have difficulty overturning their leaders’ decisions. Say, the Chinese government sticks to the zero-COVID policy, perhaps for the President’s dignity. As a result, the head’s inappropriate decision is harmful to people.
Second, nondemocratic economies thwart competition. Democratic economies give the public the right to fair trade, therefore, companies can compete under an equal environment. On the other hand, nondemocratic economies control their businesses and order them on how to manage, leading to corruption. Hence, the relationship between authorities and firms should be provided for democratically.
Third, nondemocratic states crack down on dissidents. In such states, the leader dominates and represses the opposition. For example, Vladimir Putin, the Russian President, arrests protesters to continue the invasion of Ukraine without confirming his failure, hurting his state. Thus, it is not undesirable for citizens.
Everyone makes mistakes, but if you correct them, you can minimize damages. Democracy is a useful way to do so. Hence, democratic nations should actively advance this political policy to nondemocratic ones.
