Should the death penalty be banned in Japan?
The death penalty should be banned for three reasons: not the maximum penalty, not a deterrent and perhaps not the right ruling.
First, the death penalty is not the maximum penalty. Death is just an escape from the world since the dead can neither reflect on their actions nor suffer. Criminals should reconsider what they did as long as they live in jail. It is harder than death as they are confined for quite some time and may have to bear pain due to their own sins.
Second, capital punishment is not a deterrent. People sometimes perpetrate crimes as they want to die. They are desperate to kill many persons as they cannot commit suicide and hope to be sentenced to death by authorities. They believe that death is peace. Thus, we should give them not death but life imprisonment, namely, time when they have to live until natural death.
Third, the judgment may not be the right ruling. Anyone makes mistakes. After a death-row inmate was killed, it is too late for a court to strike down the sentence. In addition, if the execution is not done for a long time after the false finding, even if the judgment is overturned, prisoners lose their opportunities for life. Hence, we should determine verdicts carefully.
The death penalty should be banned not only in Japan but also all over the world. Death is not the best way to punish crimes.
