Will electronic media replace almost all printed materials in the future?
Electronic media will not replace almost all printed materials in the future for three reasons: concentration, independence, and possession.
First, printed materials are less difficult to concentrate on reading. Indeed, electronic materials are easier to check various reference information via links, but they distract a reader’s attention, so, in particular, they are not appropriate to read difficult-to-understand books. Since understanding needs endurance, printed materials are more useful.
Second, printed stuff does not depend on technology. Needless to say, electricity is indispensable to use electronic media. Additionally, if the technology supporting the media is lost, it is impossible to read them. On the other hand, although paper materials are vulnerable to fire, they can survive for thousands of years, so now we can recognize old times through paper rolls or other things. Paper is better to preserve.
Last but not least, printed things are easier to possess. When an organization manages distributed electronic data, it can always delete them without notice. In some cases, the government interrupts the distribution and even cracks down on dissidents by following the data flow. Meanwhile, paper books can be held and concealed readily. Paper ensures anonymity, and therefore individual freedom.
Electronic media have many advantages, nevertheless, cannot replace printed materials due to the above reasons.
